House Staff Research Day
In Celebration of Scholarship

Housestaff Research Day 2009 exceeded the participation of the 2008 inaugural event validating the collaborative research efforts between faculty and trainees with the support of the institution. More than 75 posters were on display where participants presented their work to a Judging Committee of Winthrop faculty, as well as colleagues and other members of the academic community and administration. The day began with a keynote address by Dr. Wadie Bahou, Vice President for Research at Stony Brook Health Science Center who spoke to the evolution of research in the 20th and 21st centuries, giving salient examples of how a simple idea have led to some of the greatest innovations in medicine. Later in the day, 4 members of the housestaff, who were pre-selected by the Judging Committee, have oral presentations to a very curious, interdisciplinary audience.

Research Day at Winthrop has fostered a very synergistic relationship between faculty and housestaff, with residents and fellows formulating ideas, aided by their faculty mentors who in addition to their commitment of ongoing learning and discovery, seek to meet training requirements.

At Winthrop, residents in training are given the skills to pursue scientific inquiry throughout their professional careers. They are mentored in this process by approximately 170 full time faculty, and a range of other professionals at Winthrop, including, for example, PhD researchers, biostatisticians, and health outcomes researchers.

An interdisciplinary Judging Committee reviewed the posters and discussed the science behind the work with the presenting trainees. Four Posters of Distinction were then selected. The awardees included:

Nicole Ali, MD, Nephrology Fellow

Oral Paricalcitol in the Treatment of Patients with CKD and Proteinuria: A Randomized Trial
