Winthrop has been a focal point of academic medicine on Long Island for more than 20 years, with innovative programs continuously being developed to enhance teaching and stimulate learning. As a Major Teaching Affiliate of SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine, we offer a rich academic environment, with learners at all levels—from first-year medical students doing ICM at Winthrop to approximately 900 seasoned clinicians, who turn to us each semester for their continuing medical education.

Winthrop's house staff comprises more than 200 men and women who have chosen to pursue their medical careers in one of our 21 accredited residency and fellowship programs. We have become an institution of choice for residents from a broad range of competitive medical schools.

At Winthrop, we take mentoring very seriously and we do it well. A full-time faculty of approximately 150, supplemented by a voluntary staff of more than 1,000 physicians, teaches and mentors our house staff. The house staff has full access to faculty in each program, as well as to an array of support services to ensure that learning their profession can be their top priority.

Complementing the clinical and educational endeavors at Winthrop are basic science and clinical research efforts that provide the house staff with many opportunities to learn scientific methodologies, present findings at national conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals. This enterprise attracts federal grants (NIH, National Cancer Institute), state and foundation grants and hundreds of concurrent clinical trials.
